How Not to Lose an Escape Room: 7 Common Player Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

Introduction

We all love that feeling of victory when a lock clicks open and we successfully escape the room just before time runs out. Escape rooms are about emotions, logic, and adrenaline. Sometimes, however, we ourselves, completely unknowingly, spoil our own gaming experience. At Trapped Bratislava, we’ve seen hundreds of teams and compiled a ranking of the most common mistakes. Don’t worry, we’re not blaming you — these tips will help you become true escape masters!

Mistake 1: Brute Force Over Brains

Description: Attempts to break down doors, force locks open, or rip props off the walls.

Advice: An escape room is a battle of the mind, not muscle. If something doesn’t open with a light movement, it means you need a key, a code, a lever, or another logical solution. We at Trapped Bratislava never hide the solution behind brute force!

Mistake 2: Every Man for Himself

Description: Five players scatter to different corners, and no one tells the others what they found.

Advice: Communication is key. If you find a key, shout out loud: “I found a key!”. If you find a lock, say: “I have a lock here!”. Together, you will solve the task five times faster.

Mistake 3: Random Guessing

Description: Trying to guess the code on a safe by turning numbers randomly or pressing all buttons in hopes of luck.

Advice: Every solution is logical. If you’ve found three digits of a code, the fourth must be found logically, not guessed. Random solving kills the joy of real discovery.

Mistake 4: Over-Caution

Description: Fear of touching props, dread of looking inside a box or under a carpet.

Advice: Touch everything! (Within reason, see Mistake 1). An escape game is a tactile experience. The answer is often hidden behind the most common object. Boldly look into all accessible places. And don’t worry: items that shouldn’t be touched are clearly marked at Trapped Bratislava with special “Do Not Touch” signs. This is first and foremost for your safety, and it also saves you precious time during the game!

Mistake 5: Getting Stuck on One Task

Description: Four players stand over one puzzle and don’t see that there are three more available tasks in the room.

Advice: If you’re stuck, step away. Look at what else is in the room. Often, the solution to one task comes after solving another. Don’t waste precious time unnecessarily.

Mistake 6: Fear of Asking for Help

Description: A team stands for 15 minutes over one door but out of pride doesn’t ask for a hint from the operator.

Advice: The operator (Game Master) is not your enemy, but your guide. Asking for a hint is not a shame. The shame is standing in one place for the entire game and not seeing the most interesting parts. We want you to succeed!

Mistake 7: Ignoring the Story

Description: The team skips the operator’s introductory story or doesn’t read diaries and notes in the quest.

Advice: The plot is not just a background; it is a hint. Often the answer to a mystery lies in the story itself or in the character’s personality. Read everything you find!

Conclusion

Now you are armed to the teeth and ready for any challenges! Above all, play with pleasure, help each other, and don’t be afraid to be curious. Happy escaping from the Trapped Bratislava team!
